International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) has announced its acquisition of StreamSets and webMethods, the Super iPaaS (integration platform-as-a-service) enterprise technology platforms from Software AG. The deal, valued at €2.13 billion in cash, is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2024.

The acquisition of these platforms complements the US company’s existing portfolio, which includes Watsonx, Red Hat, and various IT automation products. StreamSets, a cloud-native DataOps and data ingestion platform, enhances data ingestion for Watson, IBM’s AI platform. Meanwhile, webMethods provides integration and API management tools for hybrid multi-cloud environments.

The Strategic Aim of the Acquisition

This acquisition reflects the growing importance of application integration, API management, and data integration technologies in supporting application modernization and the effective deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) across enterprises. The US company emphasizes its commitment to AI and hybrid cloud through these acquisitions.

The Technology Behind StreamSets and webMethods

StreamSets supports the design of smart data pipelines and real-time/batch data ingestion, while webMethods is an integration and API management platform available on-premises and in the cloud. It offers B2B integration, managed file transfer, and a modern API gateway for managing, monitoring, and monetizing APIs.

Super iPaaS Platform

The Super iPaaS platform of the german company, comprising StreamSets and webMethods, is profitable and has a recurring revenue profile. Together, they cater to over 1,500 clients globally.
