Volta Greentech, a biotech company, has raised nearly €1.7 million in new funding led by Axel Johnson to support the commercial launch of its methane-reducing feed additive, Lome.

The round brings the company’s total funding to over €9.5 million since its founding in 2019. Volta Greentech focuses on reducing agricultural emissions by targeting methane production in livestock, addressing a key contributor to climate change.

What The Company Does

Volta Greentech develops feed additives designed to reduce methane emissions from cattle by targeting microbes in the rumen responsible for methane production. Its approach works at the biological level, lowering emissions without compromising animal health or feed efficiency.

The company’s latest product, Lome, builds on earlier research into algae-based methane reduction. Instead of relying on large-scale algae cultivation, Lome replicates the active properties in a more controlled and scalable format. This allows for greater consistency in performance while improving production efficiency and reducing resource intensity.

The solution is designed to integrate into existing farming practices, enabling livestock producers to lower emissions without requiring major operational changes.

Market Context / Industry Background

Methane emissions from livestock represent a significant share of global greenhouse gas output, making agriculture a critical sector in climate mitigation strategies. Governments and industry stakeholders are increasingly focusing on reducing emissions from food production, particularly in Europe where regulatory pressure is intensifying.

Feed additives have emerged as a promising pathway to address these emissions at the source. However, scalability, cost, and reliability remain key challenges. Solutions that can deliver consistent results while maintaining economic viability for farmers are likely to play an important role in broader decarbonization efforts.

Volta Greentech positions its technology as cost-competitive on a per-tonne CO₂ basis, which may support adoption across both agricultural and food supply chain stakeholders.

Founder / Investor Commentary

CEO Fredrik Åkerman stated that the participation of Axel Johnson strengthens both the company’s financial position and its industrial network as it prepares for market entry. He noted that the funding will help accelerate the transition from research to real-world deployment, providing farmers with practical tools to reduce emissions.

The company emphasizes that its approach is designed to deliver measurable environmental impact while remaining aligned with the operational realities of modern agriculture.

Growth Plans / Use Of Funds

The newly raised capital will be used to advance research and development and to support the upcoming commercial rollout of Lome. Volta Greentech is currently finalizing its regulatory application within the European Union, positioning the product for broader market entry.

In parallel, the company is strengthening partnerships across the food and agriculture value chain. Its existing network includes organizations such as Coop Sverige, Axfood, Martin & Servera, Sodexo, Protos, Gäsene Mejeri, and Orkla, which may play a role in scaling adoption once the product is approved.
