Taya, a wearable technology startup founded by former Apple design engineer Elena Wagenmans, has raised $5 million in seed funding to develop its voice-based note-taking pendant.

The round was led by MaC Venture Capital and Female Founders Fund, with participation from a16z Speedrun. The funding will support product development and expansion of the company’s AI-powered voice capture platform.

What The Company Does

Taya develops wearable devices designed to capture spoken notes and convert them into searchable digital records using artificial intelligence.

Its first product, the Taya Necklace, is a pendant-style device equipped with a microphone that records voice notes when activated by the user. The device is designed to resemble jewelry rather than a traditional gadget, allowing it to be worn discreetly throughout the day.

Recording begins and ends through a button on the pendant, and the microphone remains inactive by default until manually triggered. Once a note is recorded, it is processed and stored within a companion iOS application.

The mobile app organizes recorded notes and includes an AI chat interface that allows users to search and interact with their recorded content.

Market Context / Industry Background

Wearable devices capable of capturing spoken notes have emerged as a growing product category as advances in voice recognition and generative AI make transcription and summarization more accurate.

Several startups have introduced devices designed to record meetings or everyday conversations and generate structured notes from them. Products such as dedicated recording devices or wearable microphones aim to automate note-taking and knowledge capture.

However, these technologies have also raised privacy concerns, particularly when devices record surrounding conversations or capture voices without consent.

Some new products are attempting to address these concerns by limiting recordings to the device wearer or by requiring explicit activation before recording begins.

Taya’s product focuses on capturing only the user’s voice rather than recording entire conversations or environments.

Founder / Investor Commentary

Taya founder Elena Wagenmans said the company was created to address privacy concerns associated with many voice-recording wearables.

“We realized that there is a lot of utility that you can provide being a single-player gadget,” Wagenmans said. “Essentially, we want to capture your voice, not the room that you’re in or the other people.”

The system attempts to prioritize the wearer’s voice by asking users to record a short voice sample during onboarding. This sample is then used to help the device focus on the user’s speech while minimizing background audio.

The company is also experimenting with directional microphone technology to further isolate the user’s voice.

Adrian Fenty, managing partner at MaC Venture Capital, said the product’s design and privacy-focused approach may help it reach a broader audience.

“Those products are ambient recorders; they capture meetings and conversations around you,” Fenty said. “Taya’s intentional, single-player capture is focused on just you.”

Growth Plans / Use Of Funds

Taya plans to use the seed funding to refine the hardware and software behind its wearable note-taking system.

The company is experimenting with different ways to improve the note-taking experience, including features that provide immediate feedback to users when notes are successfully recorded.

Pre-orders for the Taya Necklace are currently priced at $89, and the company is working on expanding the functionality of its companion app.

Taya was founded in 2024 by Wagenmans alongside Cinnamon Sipper and Amy Zhou, both of whom previously worked at Apple. Sipper and Zhou have since left the company.

The startup currently employs a small team based in San Francisco and intends to expand as it develops the product and prepares for wider distribution.
