Planetary, a fermentation company focused on industrial bio-based production, has raised nearly €17 million in Series A equity funding and €6.3 million in credit, bringing total funding to around €34 million.

The round was led by Radikal Capital and Oetker Ventures, with participation from Royal Cosun, arc investors, Green Generation Fund, AgriFoodTech Venture Alliance, Astanor Ventures, and XAnge. The capital will support the expansion of its industrial fermentation infrastructure and global ingredient business.

What The Company Does

Founded in 2021 by biotechnologists and engineers, Planetary is building large-scale fermentation infrastructure designed to serve as industrial backbone for the emerging bioeconomy. The company develops and operates fermentation facilities that convert biological inputs into sustainable, bio-based ingredients used across food and industrial applications.

Its proprietary platform integrates bioprocess design, scaling, and manufacturing into a single system. This includes the BioBlocks technology, which is listed on WIPO GREEN and supports the development of fermentation-based production processes from laboratory stage through to industrial deployment.

A key part of Planetary’s model is its licensing strategy. The company works with agro-industrial partners, particularly sugar producers, to transform low-value agricultural by-products into higher-value outputs such as proteins, fibres, and enzymes. This approach is positioned to improve resource efficiency while creating new revenue streams for existing agricultural supply chains.

Market Context / Industry Background

The bioeconomy sector is gaining momentum as industries look for alternatives to conventional animal- and fossil-based production systems. Fermentation technology is increasingly seen as a scalable method for producing food ingredients and industrial inputs with lower environmental impact.

Rising pressure on food systems, supply chain volatility, and sustainability regulations are accelerating investment in alternative protein and circular production models. In this context, industrial fermentation is emerging as a key enabling technology, particularly for converting agricultural inputs into scalable bio-based outputs.

Europe has become a central hub for this transition, supported by strong agri-food infrastructure and policy interest in circular economy models. Companies operating at the intersection of food technology and industrial biomanufacturing are attracting capital as investors look for scalable solutions beyond software-driven innovation.

Founder / Investor Commentary

CEO and co-founder David Brandes highlighted the increasingly competitive funding environment for non-AI sectors, noting that raising capital outside areas such as artificial intelligence and defence now requires greater operational focus and resilience than in previous years.

He added that geopolitical instability and commodity price volatility reinforce the need for more sovereign and circular food systems, arguing that these conditions strengthen the long-term case for Planetary’s approach to bio-based production.

From the investor side, Radikal Capital and Oetker Ventures led the round, supporting the company’s strategy of scaling industrial fermentation capacity alongside technology licensing partnerships with established agro-industrial players.

Growth Plans / Use Of Funds

The new capital will be used to expand Planetary’s industrial fermentation operations in Switzerland and scale its global ingredient production network. A key priority is growing its technology licensing model, particularly with partners in the agricultural processing sector.

The company also plans to further develop its sugar-to-protein platform, with a focus on reducing production costs and enabling deployment in cost-sensitive regions such as India. This expansion is intended to support broader adoption of fermentation-based food production at scale.

In parallel, Planetary is continuing to roll out commercial products under its Libre® brand and expand its presence across European retail markets, building on early market traction.
