German e-mobility startup Pionix has raised more than €8 million in a late seed round to scale its open-source technology for the global electric vehicle charging market.
The round was led by Ascend Capital Partners, with participation from Start-up BW Seed Fonds (managed by MBG Baden-Württemberg), Pale Blue Dot, Vireo Ventures, Axeleo Ventures, and additional investors.
Tackling Fragmentation in EV Charging
As EV adoption accelerates, charging infrastructure remains highly fragmented. Many hardware and software providers still rely on closed, proprietary systems that struggle to communicate with one another. This lack of interoperability has resulted in:
- High failure rates (charging session errors up to 25%)
- Poor reliability for drivers
- Inefficient maintenance and upgrades
Building a Shared Foundation for an Open Charging Ecosystem
Founded in 2021, Pionix develops open-source products designed to create a unified software foundation for EV charging technologies. Its flagship initiative, EVerest, is an open-source platform enabling charger manufacturers, operators, automakers, and fleet providers to reduce compatibility issues and accelerate innovation.
EVerest has grown into one of the world’s leading open-source cleantech projects, supported by roughly 600 contributors across more than 70 organizations and powering hundreds of thousands of chargers worldwide.
