German utility and technology company metiundo has raised €40 million in new funding to speed up the rollout of smart metering systems and further develop its proprietary software platform for the building sector.

The round was led by Octopus Energy Generation, the renewable energy and green infrastructure investment arm of Octopus Energy.

Scaling installations, software, and speed

According to co-founder and CEO Dennis Nasrun, the investment marks a major step in metiundo’s growth strategy.

“The metering market is moving fast because competitive operators are driving implementation,” Nasrun said. “From day one, we invested heavily in our own software, which gives us a level of flexibility and quality that clearly differentiates us. With this funding, we’re now scaling decisively: more installations, higher quality, and faster platform expansion.”

Part of a broader EnergyTech investment wave

The round lands amid strong momentum in European EnergyTech funding across 2025 and 2026, particularly in smart metering, grid digitalisation, and data-driven energy optimisation.

Recent comparable raises include Berlin-based Ostrom (€20M) to expand smart meter adoption and virtual power plant services, Switzerland’s enshift (€18.5M) for integrated energy-transition solutions in real estate, and London-based tem (€62.9M) to build AI-native infrastructure for energy transactions. Together with additional rounds across Belgium and Spain, disclosed funding in this segment totals roughly €150 million.

Buildings at the centre of decarbonisation

Alex Brierley, co-head of Octopus Energy’s funds management business, highlighted the strategic importance of the sector.

“Buildings and heating account for around 30% of Germany’s energy-related CO₂ emissions,” Brierley said. “At the same time, the metering industry is being reimagined. Scaling platforms like metiundo’s enables homes and businesses to cut costs and emissions by optimising technologies such as solar and batteries on-site.”

Building a nationwide smart metering backbone

Founded in 2021 by Dennis Nasrun and Felix Mücke, metiundo combines regulatory expertise, IT, and metering technology. The company employs around 70 people and focuses on digitising electricity, heat, and water data, even in technically complex buildings.

With Germany facing an urgent need to modernise its metering infrastructure, metiundo positions itself as a fast-moving metering point operator, capable of deploying and operating smart systems at scale.

The new capital will be used to expand metiundo’s installation and assembly teams, accelerate software development, and hire specialists across engineering, operations, and deployment to build integrated smart meter networks across multiple properties.

From measurement to holistic energy optimisation

metiundo’s all-in-one platform spans nearly the entire metering value chain, from planning and installation to operation, market communication, software integration, and cross-sector data processing. By capturing comprehensive energy and water usage data, the platform links consumption and generation, enabling data-driven optimisation across buildings rather than siloed energy management.
