Rotterdam-based greentech company Maxwell Spark has secured €9 million in Series B funding to expand its lithium-ion battery systems across the EU and United States.
The round was led by Alantra’s €210M Energy Transition Fund, Klima, which backs technology companies accelerating the shift to net-zero energy.
Backed by leading institutional investors
Klima is supported by Alantra and Enagás, alongside investors such as the European Investment Fund, Canadian Pension Fund, and Axis ICO. A second closing with additional funding is expected later this year.
“Maxwell Spark is proving that clean, intelligent battery solutions can deliver performance, cost savings, and resilience at scale,” said Arfa Karani, Investment Manager at Klima, noting the company’s global operations across South Africa, the US, and Europe.

Replacing outdated industrial energy systems
Founded in 2017 in South Africa and now headquartered in Rotterdam, Maxwell Spark designs lithium-ion battery systems to replace outdated industrial energy technologies. Its solutions power forklifts, refrigerated trucks, and construction sites, helping fleet operators and OEMs transition away from fossil fuels.
CEO Clinton Bemont emphasized the company’s mission:

The new funding will support product innovation and drive expansion into key European and US markets, where demand for cleaner industrial logistics solutions continues to grow.
