Apple has announced a major leadership change, with Tim Cook stepping down as CEO after more than a decade at the helm. He will be succeeded by John Ternus, currently Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, who will assume the role on September 1.
Cook, who has led Apple since 2011 following the passing of Steve Jobs, will remain closely involved with the company as Executive Chairman. At the same time, Ternus will join Apple’s board of directors, while long-time chairman Arthur Levinson transitions into the role of Lead Independent Director.
The End Of A Defining Era
Tim Cook’s tenure marks one of the most influential leadership periods in corporate history. Taking over during a time of uncertainty after Jobs’ death, Cook transformed Apple into a global powerhouse valued at around $4 trillion, with revenues more than quadrupling under his leadership.
Reflecting on his time as CEO, Cook described the role as the greatest privilege of his career, highlighting the company’s culture of innovation and its mission to improve customers’ lives.
From Operations Expert To Industry Leader
Cook joined Apple in 1998, initially tasked with fixing a struggling supply chain. Drawing on his experience at IBM and other firms, he streamlined operations, reduced inefficiencies, and turned manufacturing into a key competitive advantage.
Although not seen as a traditional product visionary, Cook proved his leadership capabilities during multiple periods when Jobs stepped back due to health issues, ultimately becoming the natural successor.

While some product initiatives—such as the Vision Pro headset—faced limited consumer adoption, Cook’s broader impact has been substantial. The firm’s Services division now generates over $100 billion annually, and categories like wearables have flourished, with the Apple Watch maintaining a leading position globally.
Levinson praised Cook’s leadership as exceptional, emphasising the lasting influence of his values and strategic direction.
John Ternus: A Longtime Insider Steps Up
At 51, John Ternus brings deep institutional knowledge, having spent nearly his entire career at Apple. After joining the company in 2001, he rose through the ranks to lead hardware engineering, becoming one of the youngest executives on the company’s leadership team.
Ternus has played a key role in shaping many of the flagship products, including the iPhone, Mac, iPad, and AirPods. He has also contributed to advancements in product durability, sustainability, and repairability, helping reduce environmental impact while extending device lifespans.

In his statement, Ternus expressed both humility and ambition, emphasising his commitment to continuing Apple’s legacy of innovation and strong values.
Cook, in turn, described Ternus as the ideal leader for the next phase, highlighting his engineering expertise, innovative mindset, and leadership integrity.
