Groundhawk, a Finnish infrastructure technology company developing AI-powered mapping tools for underground utilities, has raised €2 million in seed funding to support expansion across Europe.
The round was led by Greencode Ventures and 2C Ventures. The new capital will help the company scale its spatial intelligence platform, designed to digitise underground infrastructure such as telecommunications, energy networks, and utilities during construction.
Digitising Underground Infrastructure
Groundhawk provides a real-time 3D mapping platform that allows construction teams to capture detailed records of underground infrastructure as it is installed. The system records cables, ducts, and grid components with centimetre-level accuracy while trenches are still open, creating precise digital documentation of newly built networks.
The platform combines satellite positioning, 3D scanning, and AI-based analysis to collect installation data directly at the construction site. This information is automatically synchronised to a cloud-based platform, giving infrastructure operators and contractors immediate access to accurate network documentation.
The approach aims to replace traditional post-construction surveys, which often rely on estimates or delayed measurements that can lead to inaccuracies.
Addressing A Costly Industry Problem
As governments invest heavily in new electricity grids, fibre networks, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and renewable energy integration, accurate documentation of underground assets has become increasingly important.
Industry estimates suggest that inaccurate mapping of underground infrastructure contributes to more than €100 billion in damage globally each year. Errors in cable location data can lead to accidental strikes during construction projects, safety risks, and costly delays.
Groundhawk’s technology captures depth measurements, installation details, and visual documentation in real time during construction. This allows project teams to verify installation quality before trenches are closed, enabling issues to be identified and corrected immediately instead of being discovered during later inspections.
Integrating Mapping Into Construction Workflows
Unlike traditional surveying methods that often require specialised personnel and separate site visits, Groundhawk’s system is designed for direct use by construction crews on site.
By embedding data capture into the construction workflow, the platform converts infrastructure documentation from a passive record into an active quality-control process. According to the company, this approach can reduce surveying costs by up to 50% while giving network operators immediate visibility into project progress and compliance.
Growing Demand As Infrastructure Investment Accelerates
Demand for infrastructure mapping technology is expected to increase as Europe and the United States collectively invest more than €1 trillion in grid and network infrastructure over the next several years. Large-scale fibre deployments, electric vehicle charging networks, renewable energy integration, and efforts to move power lines underground are all contributing to the growth of underground construction projects.
Groundhawk aims to address inefficiencies in the sector, where poor data availability and coordination issues can lead to costly rework and project delays.
The company currently works with network owners, contractors, and subcontractors involved in fibre and electricity infrastructure projects. Customers include Nordic and European infrastructure providers such as Eltel Networks, Voimatel, Elvera, and Signal Group, which support network operators including Telia, Telenor, Caruna, Global Connect, E.ON, and Valokuitunen.
Expansion Plans
The new funding will support the development of a scalable B2B sales organisation across key European markets including Germany, the UK, the Benelux region, and the Nordics. Groundhawk also plans to expand its engineering team to further develop the platform’s AI and spatial intelligence capabilities.
Future product development will extend beyond construction documentation to include planning tools and predictive quality assurance features. The company aims to position its platform as a standard solution for infrastructure data capture and quality management across Europe.
