Cnuic Technologies has raised $3 million in a pre-seed funding round led by Tensor Ventures, with participation from Blank Space Ventures, Silicon Roundabout Ventures, Phasechange, SANDS, and Superlative.

The company is developing a new class of photolithography technology aimed at enabling scalable production of advanced photonic chips.

What The Company Does

Cnuic Technologies is building a photonics manufacturing platform centered on a novel photolithography device that uses light to enable fast, reconfigurable production of photonic chips with advanced three-dimensional control. The company says this capability could allow for levels of precision and flexibility in chip fabrication that are not achievable with current methods.

The core focus is on photonic chips, which differ from traditional silicon semiconductors by using photons instead of electrons to transmit information. This allows for significantly higher data transfer speeds and reduced thermal limitations, but manufacturing complexity has historically restricted large-scale adoption.

Cnuic’s system is designed to simplify and accelerate the production process, potentially reducing barriers to scaling photonic chip manufacturing.

Market Context / Industry Background

The semiconductor industry is facing physical and architectural constraints as traditional silicon-based computing approaches performance and energy limits. As a result, alternative computing paradigms such as photonics are gaining attention for their ability to handle higher bandwidth and lower heat generation.

Photonic computing is particularly relevant for data centres and artificial intelligence infrastructure, where interconnect speed and energy efficiency are becoming major bottlenecks. By using light rather than electrical signals, photonic systems can reduce communication delays between processors and improve overall system performance.

However, adoption has been slow due to manufacturing difficulty, high cost, and lack of scalable production methods. If viable at scale, photonic chips could also impact adjacent fields such as AR/VR hardware, optical computing components, metalenses, and 3D photonic structures.

Founder / Investor Commentary

Cnuic co-founder Omar Durrani described the company’s work as part of a broader technological shift in how computing systems evolve.

“We learned to use electrons. Now we are learning to use light. Cnuic is building the tools that make that possible at scale,” he said.

From the investor side, Tensor Ventures co-founder Martin Drdúl said the technology could have structural implications for the semiconductor industry and Europe’s role within it.

“From a deep tech perspective, this is a completely new technology and a major breakthrough that could mean a whole new role for Europe in the semiconductor industry,” he said.

Growth Plans / Use Of Funds

The new funding will be used to further develop Cnuic’s photolithography prototype, advance engineering efforts, and move toward industrial-scale validation of its photonic chip production system. The company is also expected to expand its technical team as it pushes toward commercial readiness.

A key objective is to demonstrate that photonic chip manufacturing can be made both scalable and cost-efficient, particularly for applications in high-performance computing and AI infrastructure.

If successful, the technology could position Cnuic as part of a new generation of semiconductor infrastructure companies focused on light-based computing systems.
