UK-based MedTech startup Cerca Magnetics has raised €4.3 million in Series A funding, reaching a post-money valuation of €34.5 million, as it accelerates the rollout of its wearable brain imaging technology powered by quantum sensing.

The round was led by Guinness Ventures. The fresh capital will be used to advance regulatory approvals, scale manufacturing, and support international expansion into clinical healthcare markets.

Bringing Brain Imaging Out Of The Lab

Founded in 2020 as a spin-out from University of Nottingham, Cerca Magnetics is rethinking how brain activity is measured.

Its system is based on magnetoencephalography (MEG), a technique that detects tiny magnetic fields generated by neural activity. Instead of relying on large, fixed scanners, the company uses lightweight, wearable quantum sensors known as optically pumped magnetometers.

This approach allows patients to move naturally during scans—opening up entirely new use cases, including brain imaging for infants and children.

Expanding Clinical Applications

Cerca Magnetics is already being used in both research and clinical environments, supporting studies and diagnostics for conditions such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and dementia.

The company is currently progressing through regulatory pathways in both the UK and the US, aiming to bring its technology into routine hospital use.

“We are now entering the next phase, bringing our systems into everyday clinical practice and making advanced brain imaging more accessible globally,” said David Woolger, CEO and co-founder.

Strong Growth And Global Adoption

The company reports rapid commercial traction, with 19 systems already deployed across neuroscience centres in 12 countries. Customers include leading institutions such as The Hospital for Sick Children in Canada, where the technology is being used to study neurological conditions including autism.

Cerca Magnetics has achieved over 100% year-on-year sales growth over the past three years, reflecting increasing demand for more flexible and accessible brain imaging solutions.

Beyond Healthcare: Expanding Use Cases

In addition to clinical applications, the company is involved in a €3.2 million project with the UK Ministry of Defence to develop a mobile system for assessing the neurological impact of blast exposure on military personnel.

A New Generation Of Neuroimaging

Investors see significant potential in Cerca Magnetics’ approach to combining advanced science with real-world usability.

By replacing bulky, restrictive imaging systems with wearable technology, the company is positioning itself at the forefront of next-generation neuroimaging.
