Swiss battery innovator BTRY has raised $5.7 million in an oversubscribed Seed round to industrialize its next-generation ultra-thin solid-state batteries.
The round was led by Redstone, with participation from Bloomhaus Ventures, Linear Capital, Kickfund, Kick Foundation, and new investors including CustomCells founders Leopold König and Torge Thönnessen. Existing backers HTGF and Zürcher Kantonalbank (ZKB) also joined the round.
Founded as a spinoff from ETH Zurich and EMPA, BTRY develops semiconductor-inspired thin-film batteries that deliver ultra-fast charging, extreme temperature resilience, and non-flammable safety — outperforming conventional lithium-ion cells in compact, high-performance devices.
“This oversubscribed round confirms strong investor confidence from deeptech and industrial experts,” said Dr. Moritz Futscher, CEO and co-founder of BTRY. “Working with this international consortium will help us transform world-class research into scalable, real-world products.”
Batteries built for extreme conditions
At just 0.1 mm thick, BTRY’s solid-state batteries can charge in about a minute and operate safely at temperatures up to 150°C, where traditional lithium-ion cells risk swelling or ignition. Their solid, solvent-free architecture eliminates flammable electrolytes and reduces waste, supporting sustainable, high-yield manufacturing.
The batteries are already attracting interest for use in smart labels, industrial sensors, medical devices, and IoT electronics — applications that demand safety, reliability, and high energy density in minimal space.
Scaling up solid-state manufacturing
With the new funding, the startup plans to scale roll-to-roll production, build industrial infrastructure, and secure commercial offtake agreements with device manufacturers. The company’s goal: to bring thin-film solid-state batteries from lab-scale prototypes to mass-market deployment.
“Our technology combines the precision of semiconductor processes with the performance of solid-state chemistry,” added Futscher. “We’re setting a new standard for how small, fast, and safe a battery can be.”
