Eindhoven-based Axelera AI, a leader in AI hardware acceleration, has secured up to €61.6 million in funding from the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (JU) and member states under the DARE Project.
The grant will support the development of Titania, a scalable AI inference chiplet designed to enhance high-performance computing (HPC) and AI workloads.
Building a European Supercomputing Ecosystem
Axelera AI is part of the DARE consortium, which aims to:
- Develop European-built AI processors and accelerators.
- Enhance digital sovereignty by reducing reliance on non-European hardware.
- Create energy-efficient, scalable computing solutions for HPC, data centers, and AI applications.
Anders Jensen, Executive Director of EuroHPC JU, emphasized the project’s significance:
“The DARE initiative marks a major milestone in European digital sovereignty, leveraging HPC and AI to develop secure, efficient, and homegrown solutions.”
Titania: A Scalable AI Inference Chiplet
Axelera AI’s Titania chiplet, set for deployment in 2028, is built on the company’s Digital In-Memory Computing (D-IMC) architecture. Key advantages include:
- Lower power consumption compared to traditional AI chips.
- Scalability across edge, cloud, and HPC applications.
- Integration of RISC-V vector extensions for enhanced adaptability.
Evangelos Eleftheriou, CTO & Co-founder of Axelera AI, highlighted the breakthrough:
“Our technology ensures unmatched efficiency and scalability, setting a new standard for AI infrastructure.”
Expanding R&D and Future Plans
With this funding, Axelera AI will:
- Expand R&D teams in the Netherlands, Italy, and Belgium.
- Develop a System-in-Package (SiP) integrating multiple Titania chiplets.
- Enhance AI and computer vision applications for industries like robotics, automotive, and data centers.
CEO Fabrizio Del Maffeo called the funding a validation of Axelera AI’s vision:
“We are grateful to the EuroHPC DARE Project for accelerating our development of next-generation AI inference technology for HPC.”
Positioning as a European AI Hardware Leader
Axelera AI, headquartered at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, has over 200 employees and has raised over $200M, including a $68M Series B round.
With €61.6M in fresh capital, the company is poised to redefine AI chip architecture, supporting Europe’s push for independent, high-performance AI computing solutions.
