Leuven-based medtech company ReVision Implant has secured €4 million in an oversubscribed funding round backed by private investors, including European medtech executives and industry operators.

The company has also received close to €4 million in EU grant support and additional backing from Plug and Play and imec.istart, bringing its total disclosed funding to more than €5.4 million.

Developing A Brain-Based Vision Restoration System

Founded in 2020 by KU Leuven researchers Dr. Frederik Ceyssens and Prof. Peter Janssen, ReVision Implant is building a neurotechnology platform designed to restore vision through direct brain stimulation.

Its flagship system, called Occular, uses a headset equipped with cameras to capture visual information and transmit it to an implant placed in the brain’s visual cortex.

Ultra-flexible microelectrodes then convert those signals into light patterns that the brain can interpret as visual input.

Unlike traditional retinal or optic nerve solutions, the company’s approach is designed to work independently of damage to the eyes or optic nerves by interfacing directly with the brain.

Scaling Toward Clinical Deployment

A central component of ReVision Implant’s technology is its thin-film electrode platform, developed to improve long-term compatibility with brain tissue while enabling significantly higher electrode density for more detailed visual stimulation.

The company says preclinical studies in primates have already demonstrated promising safety and performance results.

The newly raised capital will support the next stage of development as ReVision Implant moves toward clinical deployment.

According to CEO Frederik Ceyssens, the company is now transitioning from pure R&D into operational scaling.

“We are building our own cleanroom environment to internalise critical manufacturing processes while expanding our team and advancing our regulatory and clinical programmes,” Ceyssens said.

“At the same time, we continue developing the technology and strengthening partnerships across the medtech ecosystem as we move closer to bringing the system to patients.”
