Regensburg-based digital health startup brainjo has raised €2 million in seed funding to advance its virtual reality (VR) therapy solutions and expand access to mental healthcare.
The round was led by High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF), with additional backing from strategic investors and business angels, including Andreas Weinhut and better ventures.
Addressing Gaps In Mental Healthcare
Limited therapy capacity, long waiting times, and restricted access to care remain major challenges in mental health systems. brainjo is tackling these issues by introducing VR-based applications designed to complement traditional psychotherapy rather than replace it.
Its solutions fall under digital health applications (DiGA), meaning they can be prescribed by healthcare professionals and reimbursed by health insurance providers. Patients can access immersive, personalised therapy experiences from home, helping bridge critical gaps in treatment availability.
Virtual Reality As A Therapy Extension
The company focuses on using VR to enhance engagement and adherence in therapy. By creating interactive and immersive environments, brainjo enables new forms of treatment that go beyond conventional approaches.
According to Dr. Felix Lambrecht from MEDICE – The Health Family, VR-based therapy represents a strong strategic addition to existing treatment portfolios.
Funding To Support Clinical Validation
With the new capital, brainjo will move into its next development phase, focusing on clinical studies and regulatory approval for its first product.
This initial application is a VR-based DiGA designed specifically for children with ADHD, developed in collaboration with MEDICE. The company is targeting market approval by 2028.
HTGF highlighted the strong potential of immersive digital therapies, noting that VR enables a level of engagement that traditional software solutions often cannot achieve.
Building The Future Of Digital Therapy
CEO Markus Wensauer emphasised that the combination of strategic partners, experienced investors, and a strong network positions the company to scale its solutions within healthcare systems and establish new multimodal therapy approaches.
