Tracebit, a cloud-native cybersecurity company, has raised $20 million in a Series A funding round led by FirstMark, with participation from Accel, MMC Ventures, Tapestry VC, and CCL.

The investment follows a $5 million seed round in 2024, bringing the company’s total funding to $25 million. Tracebit is focused on improving threat detection in modern cloud environments through deception-based security technologies.

What The Company Does

Founded in 2023 by former Tessian employees Andy Smith and Sam Cox, Tracebit develops cloud-native security solutions designed to detect cyber threats at early stages. Its platform uses deception technology, deploying decoy assets known as canaries across cloud infrastructure.

These canaries are designed to appear as legitimate resources within an organization’s environment. When attackers interact with them, the system triggers alerts, enabling rapid identification of potential breaches. This approach aligns with an “assume breach” security model, where systems are designed to detect intrusions quickly rather than relying solely on perimeter defenses.

Tracebit’s platform automatically generates and distributes canaries across enterprise systems, helping organizations scale threat detection across increasingly complex infrastructures. The system is built to reduce detection time and improve visibility across cloud-based operations.

The platform currently supports thousands of accounts and processes approximately five billion events each week, generating millions of canaries daily. Its customer base includes companies such as Riot Games, Snyk, Synthesia, Docker, and Admiral Insurance.

Market Context / Industry Background

As organizations continue to migrate infrastructure to the cloud, cybersecurity challenges have become more complex. Traditional security tools, often designed for on-premise systems, are less effective in dynamic cloud environments where assets are continuously created, modified, and scaled.

This shift has increased demand for cloud-native security solutions that can operate across distributed systems, including multi-cloud environments, containerized applications, and developer pipelines. At the same time, the rise of automated and AI-driven cyberattacks has increased the need for faster detection mechanisms.

Deception technology has gained traction as a complementary approach to traditional cybersecurity tools. By placing decoy assets within systems, organizations can detect malicious activity earlier in the attack lifecycle, particularly in cases where attackers bypass perimeter defenses.

Tracebit’s expansion beyond AWS to support platforms such as Azure, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, developer workstations, and identity providers reflects the growing need for integrated security across the full cloud stack.

Founder / Investor Commentary

Tracebit’s founders built the company with a focus on addressing gaps in modern cloud security, particularly around detection speed and system visibility.

The company’s approach emphasizes proactive threat detection by assuming that breaches will occur and focusing on minimizing response time. This model is increasingly being adopted as organizations face more sophisticated and persistent attack methods.

Investors backing the round pointed to the growing complexity of cloud environments and the need for scalable detection tools as key drivers behind the investment.

Growth Plans / Use Of Funds

The Series A funding will be used to expand Tracebit’s product offerings, scale its customer base, and grow its engineering and go-to-market teams.

As part of its product expansion, the company is introducing new features including Perimeter Canaries and Deceptive Artefacts. Perimeter Canaries are designed to operate at the edge of cloud and SaaS environments, adding an additional layer of detection and enabling faster identification of external threats.

Tracebit is also extending support to Google Cloud Platform, further broadening its multi-cloud capabilities. These developments are intended to address the increasing complexity of enterprise cloud environments and provide more comprehensive coverage across infrastructure layers.

About Tracebit

Tracebit is a cloud-native cybersecurity company focused on early threat detection through deception technology. Founded in 2023, the company builds systems that deploy decoy assets across cloud environments, endpoints, SaaS applications, and development pipelines. By alerting organizations when these assets are accessed, Tracebit enables faster detection of intrusions and supports an “assume breach” approach to security.
