Austrian deeptech startup fibionic has secured €3 million in seed funding to expand the industrial deployment of its bionically optimized fiber placement technology.

The round was led by Redstone and Euregio+, with Caesar and Leap435 participating as co-lead investors alongside several angel investors.

The new capital will support the scaling of fibionic’s production technology and accelerate its transition toward series manufacturing across multiple industries.

Lightweight Engineering Inspired By Natural Structures

Founded in 2021 and based in Innsbruck, fibionic develops manufacturing technology for advanced lightweight components. The company focuses on improving the efficiency of fiber composite production, which is widely used in industries such as mobility, robotics, aerospace, sports equipment, and defense.

fibionic’s patented manufacturing approach, called fibionic fiber placement (FFP), is based on principles observed in nature. The system aligns fibers along the actual load paths within a structure, similar to how natural systems such as insect wings distribute forces.

This method allows manufacturers to produce highly stable components while using significantly less material.

The company reports that the process can achieve production cycle times of around one minute per component while improving structural performance and material efficiency.

Reducing Weight And Material Usage

By optimizing fiber placement at a structural level, the startup aims to reduce both weight and resource consumption in composite manufacturing.

The technology can reduce product weight by up to 50 percent while lowering material usage by as much as 60 percent, making lightweight engineering more sustainable and economically viable for large-scale production.

These benefits are particularly relevant for industries where weight reduction plays a critical role in performance, energy efficiency, and operating costs.

First Industrial Applications With Selle Italia

The company has already begun applying its technology in industrial partnerships. One example is its collaboration with Italian bicycle saddle manufacturer Selle Italia.

Through this partnership, components produced using the fibionic fiber placement process are now being manufactured in large-scale series, demonstrating the technology’s potential for real-world production environments.

Scaling Technology And Expanding Applications

With the new funding, the firm plans to further develop its proprietary platform and expand its industrial processes.

The company intends to grow its engineering and business development teams while preparing pilot projects for full-scale production.

In addition to manufacturing technology, fibionic is also building a broader ecosystem that includes simulation tools, automated equipment solutions, materials supply, and licensing models. This approach is designed to support companies throughout the entire composite production process.
