Munich-based EV charging technology company HeyCharge has been awarded a €2.5 million grant from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator to accelerate the rollout of its communications-free charging platform across Europe.

The company is backed by BMW i Ventures, Statkraft Ventures and Y Combinator, and has raised €6.3 million in private funding to date.

Scaling SecureCharge FLEX Across Europe

The EIC funding will support HeyCharge’s SecureCharge FLEX project, enabling further product development, certification, and large-scale pilot deployments in multiple European markets.

Founded in 2020, HeyCharge is focused on making EV charging accessible to residents of apartment buildings — a segment often overlooked due to technical and infrastructure barriers.

Its patented SecureCharge platform removes the need for mobile or Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing chargers to operate reliably even in underground garages where network coverage is typically poor.

Solving A Structural EV Charging Gap

Around 200 million Europeans live in multi-unit dwellings, many of whom park in underground garages. Traditional EV chargers rely on continuous internet connectivity for user authentication and billing, which can make them unreliable in these environments.

Additionally, conventional installations often require network cabling, routers, specialised IT labour, and ongoing maintenance — significantly increasing deployment costs.

HeyCharge’s system eliminates the need for communications infrastructure, reducing installation costs by more than 40% while ensuring fully reliable operation.

The company has already deployed its technology at more than 130 sites across Germany, covering 2,500 parking spaces. Through partnerships with major real estate operators — including Vonovia — an additional 123,000 parking spaces are now addressable.

Chris Cardé, Founder and CEO of HeyCharge, commented:

“Nearly half of Europe’s population lives in apartment buildings, and most of them park underground — exactly where internet-dependent chargers fail. Our technology works 100% reliably even in underground garages. By eliminating the need for communications infrastructure, we cut installation costs by more than 40%. That’s how you democratise home charging. This EIC Accelerator grant will help us bring it to millions of Europeans who have been shut out of the home charging revolution.”
