Amsterdam-based climate startup Proba has secured €1.25M in new funding to expand its Scope 3 fertiliser emissions reduction model into the United States and Brazil.
The round was backed by existing investors Future Food Fund, Yield Lab Europe, and Value Factory Ventures.
The capital will be used to grow Proba’s presence in regions that play a central role in global food production and where fertiliser-related emissions account for a significant share of agricultural carbon footprints.
Turning fertiliser reductions into certified Scope 3 impact
Founded in 2022 by Sijbrand Tieleman and Rutger Been, Proba focuses on converting fertiliser emissions reductions and other on-farm climate interventions into certified Scope 3 results for agri-food companies.
Agriculture remains one of the most emissions-intensive sectors globally, with nitrogen fertilisers alone responsible for roughly 5% of total greenhouse gas emissions. For many staple crops, emissions from fertiliser production and in-field use represent a substantial portion of overall climate impact.
Despite the availability of low-carbon fertiliser solutions, adoption has been slow due to higher costs and misaligned incentives across supply chains. Proba aims to address this gap by making fertiliser-related emissions reductions measurable, financeable, and credible for downstream buyers.
Expanding into high-impact agricultural regions
Proba views the Americas as a critical growth opportunity, given their importance to global food systems and the scale of fertiliser use across key crops. By expanding into the U.S. and Brazil, the company aims to help agri-food businesses accelerate verified Scope 3 reductions where they can have the greatest impact.
The platform delivers certified Scope 3 impact through Impact Units, traceable certificates that quantify and verify emissions reductions tied to specific practices. Each Impact Unit represents one tonne of verified CO₂e reduction and is recorded in a blockchain-secured registry, with independent third-party verification completed before issuance.
Investor confidence in scalable Scope 3 solutions
According to Future Food Fund, fertiliser emissions remain one of the most under-accounted sources of climate impact in agri-food value chains. The firm highlighted Proba’s combination of scientific rigor and practical implementation as key to unlocking large-scale Scope 3 action as companies face increasing pressure to deliver verified results.
Sijbrand Tieleman, CEO and co-founder, said the company’s goal is to make fertiliser-related Scope 3 reductions a standard component of global agri-food supply chains. He added that the new funding allows Proba to operate in regions that matter most to customers and to accelerate adoption at scale.
