Polar Light Technologies, a Linköping-based semiconductor company developing next-generation MicroLED displays, has secured more than €5 million in new funding to move closer to commercial deployment of its technology.
The investment round was led by J2L Holding AB, with participation from STOAF, Almi Invest, and Butterfly Ventures.
From prototype to first commercial products
The newly raised capital will be used to support the launch of Polar Light Technologies’ first commercial offerings, all based on its proprietary pyramidal MicroLED platform.
According to CEO Oskar Fajerson, the company has moved rapidly from research to demonstrable hardware. After unveiling its first MicroLED display prototype in May last year, the team is now focused on translating that progress into market-ready products.
Initial commercial applications will target compact, purpose-built heads-up displays, with follow-on use cases planned for smart glasses and wearable devices.
A different approach to MicroLED manufacturing
Founded around a novel semiconductor process, Polar Light Technologies develops MicroLEDs using pyramidal structures grown without etching. This approach enables full RGB emission on a single epi-wafer, simplifying manufacturing while supporting extremely small pixel sizes.
The architecture delivers high brightness and strong energy efficiency, two key requirements for next-generation display systems where power consumption and visibility are critical.
By avoiding complex etching steps, the company aims to make MicroLED displays easier to scale and integrate compared to existing solutions.
Growing visibility in the display ecosystem
In 2025, Polar Light Technologies publicly showcased its technology at major industry events, including Display Week and MicroLED Connect, where it presented updated versions of its display prototypes.
These demonstrations marked important milestones in validating the performance and manufacturability of the company’s platform in front of display manufacturers and ecosystem partners.
Johan Lindh, CEO of J2L Holding AB, said the company is well positioned as the MicroLED market begins to mature, highlighting Polar Light’s focus on simplifying production and accelerating adoption across multiple display categories.
Positioning for the post-OLED display era
MicroLED is widely seen as a successor to LCD and OLED technologies, offering longer lifetimes, higher brightness, and improved energy efficiency. However, large-scale adoption has been slowed by manufacturing complexity and cost.
Polar Light Technologies aims to address these barriers with a platform designed for scalability from the outset, positioning itself as a key supplier for emerging display formats in augmented reality, wearables, and specialized visualization systems.
With fresh capital in place, the company is now focused on productization, customer engagement, and preparing its technology for broader market rollout.
