Voize, a nursing-focused AI companion platform, has raised $50 million in a Series A round led by Balderton Capital, with participation from existing backers HV Capital, Redalpine, and Y Combinator.
The world is facing an unprecedented nursing shortage.
- The WHO forecasts a 4.5 million nurse deficit by 2030.
- Europe is already missing 1.2 million healthcare workers.
- The U.S. could experience a shortfall of up to 450,000 nurses per year.
Across both regions, nurses spend nearly 30% of their working hours on administrative tasks, costing an estimated $246 billion annually. This contributes to burnout, turnover, and less time for direct patient care.
While AI innovation has surged for physicians, nurses—who make up the largest segment of the healthcare workforce—have been underserved. Their workflows are complex, fast-paced, and often paper-based. Voize aims to change that.
AI Built for Nurses, With Nurses
Founded in 2020 by twins Fabio and Marcel Schmidberger along with Erik Ziegler, Voize emerged from the brothers’ experience supporting their grandfather in a nursing home. They saw firsthand how much time staff spent on documentation instead of care.
The startup developed its AI companion in collaboration with nurses over tens of thousands of hours inside care facilities. The tool listens as nurses speak during their rounds, interprets their notes, and automatically handles real-time documentation, scheduling, and EHR updates.
Purpose-built AI models
Voize’s in-house AI models are tailored to nursing:
- Understand medical terminology
- Recognize regional dialects
- Support non-native speakers
- Capture complex care procedures accurately
Works offline, on any smartphone
Unlike most healthcare AI tools, Voize runs locally on the device, without requiring constant internet access—ensuring security, reliability, and usability even in hospitals or care homes with poor connectivity.
Rapid Adoption Across Europe
Voize is now used by:
- 1,100 care facilities in Germany and Austria
- 75,000+ nurses
- Saving up to 30% of documentation time per shift
Its impact is so strong that care facilities highlight Voize in their recruitment ads, saying it helps attract nurses in a competitive labor market.
What the Investors Are Saying
Fabio Schmidberger, Co-founder & CEO:
“Nurses enter the profession to care for people—and leave it because of admin work. Technology has failed them for too long. At Voize, AI works in the background so people can come first. Seeing nurses rediscover the joy in their work has been incredible.”
Daniel Waterhouse, General Partner at Balderton:
“Nurses are overwhelmed by tasks that take them away from patients. Voize listened, understood, and built AI that restores the human side of care rather than replacing it.”
Next Steps
With this new funding, Voize plans to:
- Expand across more European markets
- Enter the United States
- Continue developing AI features that further reduce administrative load
The company’s mission remains simple: give nurses back more time for patient care.
