Street sports and culture platform CityLegends has raised $2 million (€1.7 million) in fresh funding to scale its technology and expand globally, uniting urban athletes and creators across continents.

The round saw participation from GFR Fund (San Francisco), Dutch Sport Tech Fund, Leisure Fund, and SportInnovator, alongside follow-on investments from LUMO Labs and LeanSquare.

“CityLegends has had an audacious global vision for their community from the start,” said Andy Lürling, Founding Partner at LUMO Labs. “With global investors like GFR Fund joining, we’re confident CityLegends will accelerate its impact on the urban sports world.”

Building the Digital Home for Urban Sports

Founded in 2020 by Jimmy Hermans and Thijmen Verkerk, CityLegends connects street athletes, creators, and fans through one global digital hub. The platform celebrates communities across skateboarding, BMX, freerunning, dance, and street art, giving users tools to share clips, discover spots, organize events, and compete in digital “street Esports.”

Blending media, gaming, and social interaction, CityLegends transforms urban culture into a connected, measurable ecosystem — linking real-world street culture with global digital engagement.

“Urban culture being included in the 2028 Olympics is proof of its growing recognition,” said Jimmy Hermans, Co-founder and CEO. “Participation already rivals football or basketball, but the digital ecosystem still lags behind. This funding helps us unite 200 million athletes and inspire 2 billion fans worldwide.”

Expanding a Global Movement

The company is currently active in 40+ cities across Europe, the U.S., and Asia, empowering local scenes while connecting them globally. The company plans to use the new funding to:

  • Expand into new international markets
  • Enhance both free and premium platform features
  • Grow its B2B media division
  • Launch “culture playbooks” — a toolkit for brands to authentically engage with street culture communities.

“Our technology is about enabling community,” said Thijmen Verkerk, Co-founder and CTO. “We’re building the tools for people to meet on the streets, compete, progress, and showcase what they stand for.”

Bertrand Joiret, Investment Manager at LeanSquare, added: “CityLegends stands out as a next-generation media platform for urban sports. Its vision and traction position it perfectly to become a global leader in this fast-growing cultural movement.”
