Swedish startup SeaPattern has secured €5 million in funding to scale its AI-driven hydropower solution, marking one of the largest private investments in European hydropower in recent years.
The round was led by Industrifonden, with participation from Norrsken Launcher and other existing backers, bringing SeaPattern’s total raised to more than €6.5 million.
“SeaPattern addresses one of Europe’s most pressing challenges: how to expand renewable energy without building new infrastructure,” said Anna Ljungdahl, Senior Investment Director at Industrifonden. “Their solution delivers both performance and scalability, while turning hardware into recurring revenue. We believe they can become a key player in Europe’s energy transition.”
The company also signed a memorandum of understanding with a major European utility, laying the foundation for future commercial adoption of its plug-and-play hydropower system.
Enhancing output without new dams
Founded in 2020 by Niklas Boman and Marcus Filipsson, SeaPattern’s technology increases the efficiency of existing hydropower plants by 7–10% without building new infrastructure.
Its modular floating turbines, deployed in clusters, are paired with AI-powered software to optimize placement and performance. According to the company, this achieves a levelized cost of energy 4–5 times lower than alternative methods.
“We’re proud to secure this investment, which shows strong market confidence in our solution,” said Boman, CEO of SeaPattern. “From field trials to this MoU, we’ve proven that existing hydropower capacity can be unlocked quickly and sustainably.”
Scaling up industrial deployment
SeaPattern will use the fresh capital to move from successful field trials toward industrial rollout. The startup has tested its system with Tekniska Verken at the Svartåfors hydropower plant, showing consistent gains without disrupting operations.
The funds will support validation of its AI-enabled CFD software, which dynamically repositions turbines to maintain optimal output, and the expansion of its team to accelerate commercialization.
“Autonomous hydropower systems that boost output without harming the environment are exactly what Europe needs,” added Boman. “Our mission is to demonstrate that hydropower can scale without compromise.”
