Unbound Potential, a Swiss energy storage startup, has raised €14.4M in one of Europe’s largest pre-seed rounds to advance its membrane-free redox flow battery technology and prove scalability through pilot projects.

The round combines €8M in non-dilutive grants and €6.4M in equity, led by Founderful with co-lead Kvanted and participation from Zürcher Kantonalbank (ZKB). Additional support came from SPRIN-D, Innosuisse, Migros Pioneer Fund, and the City of Zurich’s KlimUP initiative.

Why it matters

By 2040, global demand for batteries is expected to triple, far outpacing supply. Unbound Potential’s design bypasses costly and complex steps in traditional battery production, making it the simplest and fastest-to-produce stationary battery system on the market.

Its membrane-free redox flow batteries use liquid electrolytes to store energy, eliminating expensive components and enabling lower-maintenance, cost-efficient scaling of stationary energy storage.

Next steps

  • Pilot projects will test the system’s viability, including collaborations with Amazon (for logistics electrification) and FlexBase (Europe’s largest redox flow storage project at the “Star of Laufenburg”).
  • The first pilot plant is slated to launch in mid-2026.

CEO David Taylor said:

“This is one of Europe’s largest pre-seed rounds and a decisive step toward our vision of a future powered entirely by renewable energy. With this capital, we can accelerate development and prove scalability in real-world projects.”

Investor Antonia Albert (Founderful) added:

“Unbound has created the simplest, fastest-to-produce battery in the world. As demand outpaces supply, availability—not just innovation—will drive the energy transition.”

With its technology, Unbound Potential aims to transform grid storage, EV fleet operations, and data center energy systems, positioning Switzerland at the forefront of the next generation of large-scale renewable energy infrastructure.
