Yangi, a Swedish sustainable packaging technology company, has secured SEK 40M (~€3.6M) from the Swedish Energy Agency’s Pilot and Demonstration Program to build its first full-scale demonstration plant for fibre-based packaging.

Founded in 2014 by Anna Altner, Yangi is pioneering the industrialisation of dry-forming technology, which shapes cellulose into 3D packaging formats without water and with significantly reduced energy use. The approach cuts CO2 emissions by up to 70% compared with conventional plastic or wet-moulded fibre packaging.

Introducing Cellera: dry-forming at scale

Yangi’s core innovation is Cellera, a dry-forming machine platform that converts cellulose pulp into packaging designed to fit within existing recycling streams. Benefits include:

  • No added process water
  • 75% lower energy use vs. wet moulding
  • 70% fewer CO2 emissions vs. plastic packaging
  • Quick changeovers and flexible production runs
  • Minimal staffing requirements

By combining airlaid fibre processing with dry-forming methods, Cellera enables continuous production lines with high material utilisation and consistent quality — positioning it as a viable alternative to plastics.

Applications across industries

Yangi is working with partners to bring dry-formed fibre packaging into markets including:

  • Takeaway food and single-use products
  • Beauty and cosmetics packaging that enhances branding
  • Consumer electronics packaging that offers protection and surface design flexibility

The company is also developing advanced features such as laminated barriers, tailored material formulations, embossing, debossing, undercut designs, and extended shelf-life packaging.

Driving commercialisation

The new demonstration plant represents a major step toward scaling fibre-based packaging as a commercial alternative to plastics.

“Our goal is to transform packaging by replacing fossil-based plastics with renewable, recyclable cellulose solutions,” said Anna Altner, founder of Yangi.

As consumer demand and regulations push for more sustainable options, Yangi is positioning its dry-forming platform as a European frontrunner in the global shift toward circular packaging systems.
