Zurich-based Freename, a startup bridging traditional Web2 and emerging Web3 digital identity systems, has raised €5.5 million ($6.5M) in a Series A funding round.
The investment was led by Entrée Capital, with participation from Polymorphic Capital, Sparkle Ventures, Blockchain Founders Fund, and Golden Record Ventures.
Revolutionizing domains for the decentralized internet
Founded by Davide Vicini and Mattia Martone, Freename allows users and companies to create and monetize custom Top-Level Domains (TLDs), offering new revenue opportunities through second-level domain sales. Their infrastructure supports seamless compatibility across major blockchains such as Polygon, Solana, Base, and BNB Chain, while also functioning in standard web browsers like Chrome and Safari.
“In Web2, domains are static; they point to servers. In Web3, they become dynamic, pointing to wallets, smart contracts, and on-chain reputations,” said CEO Davide Vicini. “Freename is building the foundation for a unified internet.”

Empowering identity and interoperability
Freename’s key features include a collision management system for resolving identical domain names across multiple chains and a proprietary resolution protocol that allows Web2 and Web3 systems to interoperate. The startup’s technology aims to position domain names as multi-chain digital passports, fostering a secure, decentralized internet.
COO Mattia Martone added, “We’re not just creating a new asset class—we’re empowering everyone to participate in building a decentralized internet.”
The fresh capital will be used to expand globally, drive product innovation, and promote the regulated use of both IP and wallet addresses. With backing from a range of VCs and angels—including the former CEO of Coinbase Custody and Target Global’s co-founder—Freename is poised to redefine digital identity management.
