Enschede-based QuiX Quantum has raised €15 million in a Series A round to accelerate the development of its first-generation universal photonic quantum computer.
The funding was co-led by Invest-NL and the EIC Fund, with participation from existing backers including PhotonVentures, Oost NL, and FORWARD.one.
The announcement follows a major technical milestone for the company—demonstrating the on-chip generation of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states, a fundamental component for scalable photonic quantum computing.
Pioneering scalable quantum technology in Europe
Founded in 2019 by Dr. Hans van den Vlekkert, Dr. Jelmer Renema, and researchers from the University of Twente, QuiX Quantum is one of Europe’s leading providers of photonic quantum hardware. The company’s systems, based on silicon-nitride chips, are designed for large-scale production, operate at room temperature, and are compatible with data centre infrastructure.
“With our first-generation system in 2026, we will demonstrate universality by overcoming long-standing challenges in fast feed-forward electronics and single-photon sources,” said Dr. Stefan Hengesbach, CEO of QuiX Quantum. “This funding round fuels our mission to develop core building blocks for fault-tolerant quantum computers.”
Strategic momentum and next milestones
In 2022, QuiX Quantum became the first company worldwide to sell both 8-qubit and 64-qubit photonic quantum computers to the German Aerospace Centre (DLR QCI). In 2024, it launched cloud access to its systems, enabling hybrid quantum-classical computing.
Looking ahead, QuiX plans to release a next-generation system in 2027 with built-in error correction, a step toward industrial-scale applications in drug development, advanced manufacturing, and financial fraud detection.
Strengthening Europe’s quantum ecosystem
The company’s expansion also supports the broader European quantum supply chain. By producing scalable, energy-efficient systems and maintaining close ties with academic and industrial partners, QuiX is playing a pivotal role in positioning Europe as a leader in quantum photonics.
Stay tuned as QuiX Quantum continues its journey toward realizing a truly universal and scalable quantum future.
