UK-based legal tech startup Valla has raised $2.7 million in seed funding to expand its AI-driven platform that helps employees pursue legal action against their employers without the need for costly law firms.

The round was led by Ada Ventures, with participation from Active Partners, Portfolio Ventures, and returning backers Techstart and the Resolution Foundation.

From tax apps to legal tools

Founded in 2022 by Danae Shell, Valla was built on a simple premise: if people can file taxes from a smartphone, they should be able to manage a legal case just as easily. The platform allows users to collect evidence, generate legal documents, and receive coaching from legal experts through each phase of a case. So far, over 12,000 workers have used the platform to file employment claims and negotiate settlements.

Valla’s generative AI engine plays a behind-the-scenes role by summarizing case details for legal coaches, taking notes during calls, and automating reminders and administrative tasks. Shell noted that AI adoption began in early 2023, helping the platform scale while keeping support accessible and affordable.

Growth beyond employment law

With fresh capital in hand, Valla plans to grow its presence by expanding its marketing efforts, deepening relationships with unions and insurers, and rolling out additional AI features. Looking ahead, the company intends to branch out into small claims and tenant disputes, and eventually expand into the U.S. and Europe.
