Seattle-based microservices orchestration startup Temporal has raised $146 million in Series C funding, bringing its total funding to $350 million.

The round was led by Tiger Global, with participation from returning investors Index Ventures and Sequoia Capital.

Despite the large round, Temporal’s valuation remained largely flat, now standing at $1.72 billion, only slightly up from its $1.5 billion valuation in early 2023.

From Microservices to Agentic AI

Founded by Samar Abbas and Maxim Fateev, both former Uber engineers, Temporal originally built its platform to orchestrate workflows between distributed services — managing tasks like payment processing, customer onboarding, and order fulfillment.

But the company is now setting its sights on the rapidly emerging space of agentic AI — AI agents that autonomously interact with data and systems to execute complex tasks. Temporal sees a growing opportunity to support these agents by ensuring reliable, fault-tolerant microservice orchestration behind the scenes.

“We’re moving toward a world where agents powered by LLMs are expected to execute long workflows. That’s where Temporal shines,” said CEO Samar Abbas.

New Investments in AI and Global Growth

The funding will be used to:

  • Expand R&D, especially around AI-driven use cases
  • Grow availability across public cloud platforms like Azure
  • Scale sales and marketing efforts
  • Continue developing Nexus, a security and modularity feature within Temporal Cloud

The company also plans to expand headcount from 250 to over 300 and deepen its presence in EMEA and APAC.

Strong Enterprise Adoption

The firm has a growing list of high-profile clients, including Stripe, Instacart, Snap, Box, and Nvidia, which use the platform to support both traditional and AI-powered workloads.

While growth has slowed slightly — revenue grew 4.4x in the last 18 months, compared to 20x growth in 2022 — the platform’s traction continues to build:

  • 183,000+ active open source users
  • 2,500 customers on Temporal Cloud, its enterprise managed service

With its roots in durable workflow execution and a growing foothold in AI, the company is positioning itself as a core infrastructure layer for the future of intelligent software agents.
